Join the Poets' Asylum this week for a feature by Chad Anderson.
Chad is a poet, teacher, skateboarder and A/V geek from the Jersey
Shore. He's been a member of 4 nationally competing poetry slam teams
and has performed around the country twice. He was a member of the 2005
NYC Urbana team and the 2007 New Jersey Grand Slam Champion. He is a
member of the Executive Council of Poetry Slam Inc. and the creator
and host of New Jersey's own poetry slam, self deprecatingly titled,
Loser Slam. Check out samples of his work on his MySpace page.

June 21st Revisited

What a great night at the Poets' Asylum this week. We had
a full house for Father's Day, a packed open with 6 new readers and a fantastic
feature by Melinda Lee. Melinda gave us a well paced set with heavy &
deep pieces mixed together with some humorous work. Bill MacMillan joined her
at the mic for a dual voice version of "Frequently Asked Questions" which
generated much audience laughter. Her pieces on the holocaust and the struggle
of a relationship drew appreciative silence followed by enthusiatic applause.
Thank you for sharing your work with us Melinda.

So far this year we have raised $1569 toward the expenses of sending a team to
the 2009 National Poetry
Slam. Thanks to all those who have given money in support of the team.

The team has produced a chapbook to help raise money for their
trip to Florida in August. You can pick up a copy from Cyndi Keeley at the
reading. We are asking for a minimum donation of $5 for the book; you can
always give more if the spirit moves you. We also have a t-shirt design in the
works. You can reserve a shirt in your size by e-mailing webmaster @ poetsasylum.org with
your shirt size. We expect shirts to sell for $15 each.

We still need to raise a minimum of another $931 to cover our
expenses. To date the Poets' Asylum has spent $2438.50 on NPS registration,
hotel rooms & airfare to West Palm Beach. We have at least another couple
hundred in necessary expenses before August. We can't do this without you and
we thank you for your generosity.

The next
Ballard Street Poetry Journal Writing Workshop starts up on July
5th. The worshop is titled Looking to Mythology and Legend and will
be led by 2009 Worcester Slam Team member Dave Keali'i. The goal
of this workshop is to utilize the rich tradition of world mythology
and legend in poetry. While Greek and Roman mythology is a vast mine,
there is a whole world out there that can be explored. Participants are
encouraged to keep an open mind and consider what other pantheons,
archetypes and legend may be discovered.

The workshops will run on July 5th, 19th and 26th from 2:00
to 4:00 p.m. Registration for the workshop series is required. To register,
