Remembering Gabrielle Bouliane
Gabrielle Bouliane, a stalwart of the Slam Poetry community, has passed
away. She spearheaded the founding of the video program of Poetry Slam Inc.
and is the founder of LivePoets.com <http://livepoets.com/>, a collection of
freely streamed slam poetry work. First and foremost she was a poet with a
powerful voice. Her work was intensely personal as she shared the first
person perspective of dating, sex and beyond. Many attendees of the National
Poetry Slam get their first glimpse of Gabrielle as the perennial host of
the National Erotica Slam showcase.
She believes in the slam as a flawed but uniquely American art form, and she
believes in poetry as a way to get people deeply connected to themselves and
each other. Her brilliance and vivaciousness will be missed.
You can read & listen to several of her poems at one of the websites she
created, livepoets.com <http://www.livepoets.com/poet.aspx?id=14>. Or view
the YouTube video <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gePQuE-7s8c> of a piece
she performed at the Austin Poetry Slam in December 2009.

Coming up on Sunday, February 7th
This Sunday, February 7th, the Poets' Asylum will hold our usual rockin'
poetry open mic followed by an *Open Slam*. This will be a just-for-fun two
round slam with all the usual rules
<http://poetsasylum.org/slam.html#SPIEL>in play. Simply put, poetry
slam is the competitive art of performance
poetry. It puts a dual emphasis on writing and performance, encouraging
poets to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it. Slam poetry
can be moving, funny and deadly serious, sometimes all in the same poem. If
that sounds like a good time then join us for some great words.
The winner takes home $10 and I bet we finish up in time for you to catch
most of the "big game". Come on down to Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler
Street, Worcester). The sign-up list goes out by 6:00 p.m. and the reading
starts by 6:30 p.m. No cover however please put some money in the bucket; it
helps to support the reading.

January 31st Revisited
Nice reading this week with a good size open mic and a rockin' feature
by *Megan
Thoma*. The open featured a couple of new voices; we hope you'll join us
again. Following the open Megan took to the mic with her powerful voice and
amazing wordcraft. With a bit of energy, a bit of saltiness, a few fist
bumps and a giant sea creature she wove a wonderful tapestry of words that
left the audience wowed and wanting more. Thankfully she had a lovely book
to sell those who craved more words. We're glad you braved the cold to join
us Megan. Don't be a stranger.
