Greeting from the Poets' Asylum.
------------------------------
New Name - Same Great Poetry
The After Nine Poetry Series - Every Thursday Night
The *The After Nine Poetry Series*, former The Spot, is a weekly poetry
reading in the Ship Room at the Hotel Vernon (1 Kelly Square, Worcester).
The reading gathers starting at 8:00 p.m. but honestly things don't usually
get started until 9ish. They hold an open mic followed by a feature and this
week the feature will be *Dave Macpherson*. Macpherson is the host of the
once a month Worcester Storytellers, a member of the WCPA board and a member
of several Worcester Slam teams. He plans to have a new chapbook available.
21+ and proper id is required.
------------------------------
Coming up on Sunday, May 31st
[image: A Stopwatch] Please join the *Poets' Asylum* on Sunday, May 31st for
our regular poetry open mic and the *One Minute Slam*. This just-for-fun
slam will consist of 3 1-minute rounds. You must use your own work and the
other regular rules (no props, time penalties) are in effect. From haiku to
short nuggets of poetic gold this should be a fast paced good time. We hope
you'll join in the fun.
Come on down to Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The
reading starts at *6:00 p.m.* No cover; please throw some money in the
bucket to support the reading and the 2009 Worcester Slam team.

Fundraising Update
Thanks to all those who threw money into the bucket when it went around at
the Team Finals on May 24th. We raised $200 that night. We can't do this
without you!
We still need to raise an additional $1113 to send the team to West Palm
Beach (and bring them back), cover the hotel room, pay for PSI memberships
for the team members and maybe give the team a bit toward food.

May 24th Revisited
[image: 2009 Team] Congratulations to the 2009 Worcester Slam Team...
Danielle Carriveau, Trevor Byrne-Smith, Dave Keali'i, Danny Balel and
alternate McKendy Fils-Aime. They will represent Worcester at the 2009
National Poetry Slam <http://nps2009.com/> in West Palm Beach, Florida.
It was quite a night with a small open, a packed house and the four round *2009
Worcester Slam Team Finals*. All eight competitors brought their best work
and there was nary a stumble along the way. We are grateful to Liz Heath,
Trevor Byrne-Smith, Cowboy Matt, Danny Balel, Dave Keali'i, Danielle
Carriveau, Aslan King and McKendy Fils-Aime for sharing their talent with
us. There was a tie for first place but that's not important. With only four
spots available on the team we found ourselves with a tie for fourth place
at the end of the night. Danny & McKendy went head-to-head in a fifth round
and Danny snagged the four slot on the team rooster. McKendy earned the
alternate spot; we hope to raise enough money to send him to Nationals along
with the team. The scores can be viewed on the Slam
page<http://poetsasylum.org/scorelink.html>
.
Our thanks to slammaster Bill MacMillan for running a great show, Cydni
Keeley for collecting the scores and to the amazing supporters of slam
poetry in Worcester who showed up in force, kept the energy high and cheered
all the competitors. We couldn't do this without any of you. Heck, we
wouldn't want to do this without all of you.
