Competitors should bring at least 30 haiku to participate. A descendant and sub-genre of poetry slam, a Haiku Death Match is a competitive head-to-head poetry duel. The Haiku Death Match has been a prominent "sideshow" feature at the annual National Poetry Slam since in the mid 1990s. Haiku is a traditional form of Japanese poetry consisting of 17 syllables in three metrical phrases of five syllables, seven syllables, five syllables. Haiku in English usually appear in three lines, to parallel the three metrical phrases of Japanese haiku. Slam haiku used in a Haiku Death Match is far simpler - just 17 syllables. Come on down to Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The reading starts around 6:00 p.m. No cover; please put some money in the bucket to support reading. November 29th Revisited Thanks to everyone who came out Sunday night for the Thanksgiving weekend edition of the Poets' Asylum. Following the open mic we held an *Open Slam*. Four poets participated - Max, Aisha, Danielle and Nick. Following two rounds, and a killer time penalty, Nick won the slam and took home the $10 cash prize. ------------------------------ Find us online at http://poetsasylum.org/. This will be a one round slam with a invitational slate of 7 competitors plus one wild card slot for someone present that night who is prepared to take part. Each person will perform the "speech of their life" about some topic they find deeply important, personal or just plain enriching. Performances will be judges by audience members and the winner of the night will head home with some bragging rights (and a prize of some sort if we can figure out something appropriate). Come on down to Jumpin' Juice and Java (335 Chandler Street, Worcester). The sign-up list goes out by 6:00 p.m. and the reading starts by 6:30 p.m. No cover; please put some money in the bucket to support reading. ------------------------------ December 6th Revisited We had a good reading this week with the regular open mic and the *Head-to-Head Haiku Deathmatch*. Only two people decided to take part in the slam, Nick Davis and Gary Hoare. We went with a best of 11 rounds approach so the first poet to receive 6 wins would take home the prize. The slam ended up running all eleven rounds and darn near had a tie. Host Danny Balel called it with Nick receiving the final win and the $10 prize. It was a fun, if shorter than normal, night. ------------------------------ Photo Gallery Update [image: Photo Album] On December 5th and 6th we uploaded nine new photo sets of features from the past four months to the 2009 Albums. It was a very interesting event with the participants offering talks on a variety of topics ranging from abuse to memory, organizing to bad teeth. Three judges from the audience gave closed scores to each of the speakers and at the end of the night host Danny Balel tallied up the scores and delivered the verdict. Before we get to that here are some memorable lines (hopefully I got them down correctly). - *"My memory is an eggplant."* - Megan Thoma - *"Stories that are good always start with a half truth."* - Bobby Gibbs - *"Starting with the slime becoming earth!"* - Dave Keali'i - *"We are responsible for creating ourselves."* - Heather Macpherson - *"We are constantly in the process of choosing our identities."* - Alex Charalambides - *"Your thoughts race, they all fall on each other like a waterfall."* - Tony Brown - *"My eyes a bathtub slowly filling with water."* - Melinda Lee At the end of the night *Tony Brown* received the highest score and took home bragging rights plus a lovely orange plastic spider. ------------------------------ Find us online at http://poetsasylum.org/.
